Because author Gregg Barak on page 262 of his book described my analysis of one his articles as a “hatchet job,” by which I assume he means unfair criticism, I will respond to his remarks about my newspaper column from 1987.

Barak makes a number of errors in the single paragraph he devotes to responding to my column. He states that I devoted my “entire editorial” to critiquing his piece. In fact, my analysis appeared in my bylined column and not in an editorial. Columns are the opinion of the author. Editorials are the opinion of the newspaper and are unsigned.

(By the way, the “entire” column consisted of a mere 486 words, and I used nearly half that space presenting Barak’s points.)

As clearly stated on the column itself, I was then the editorial page editor of The Mobile Press, the afternoon edition of The Mobile Press Register, and not of the overall newspaper.

Barak says that his article was distributed “statewide,” but then seems to criticize me for commenting on it because it “had not been published within 150 miles of Mobile.” For those unfamiliar with Alabama geography, a distance of 150 miles from Mobile takes in almost the entire southern half of the state. Apparently, “statewide” distribution doesn’t include anywhere south of Montgomery, where Barak was stationed at the time.

Barak writes that whether my “remarks were correct is beside the point.” Perhaps that is because they were correct, but Barak doesn’t seem to concern himself much with accuracy or truth. Although he calls my analysis a “hatchet job,” he never states where my comments were unfair.

I will do something Barak did not do. I will provide you with my entire column so that you may decide for yourself if it is I or Barak who is guilty of a hatchet job. One interesting thing to note from the column: Barak’s outlandish prediction that “75 percent of all working Americans will be living in poverty by 2000.” The passage of time has put the lie to much of what Barak said.

Here is my column from June 28, 1987:

“Two Montgomery educators are distributing a fallacy-laden opinion article on the causes of poverty in Alabama to the state’s newspapers in the hope of generating support for their proposed solutions.

“If the proposals in the article were actually undertaken, they would cause more harm to the very poor the authors seek to help.

“The article was written by Gregg Barak and Charlotte Pagni. Barak has a doctorate in criminology and is chairman of the Department of Criminal Justice at Alabama State University in Montgomery. Charlotte Pagni has a master’s degree in film, is an educator and serves as the community relations coordinator for Aid to Inmate Mothers.

“Among the fallacies put forth by the authors are: More and more members of the middle class are slipping into poverty and becoming the ‘new poor;’ the number of poor is increasing rapidly; the state’s high infant mortality rate, high utility bills for the poor and low quality of social services result from rich landowners dominating Alabama politics; 75 percent of all working Americans will be living in poverty by 2000.

“Barak and Pagni assert that, ‘As the gulf between the “haves” and “have-nots” continues to widen, the only viable solution involves a fundamental redefinition of work and a redistribution of our resources.’

“Among the solutions proposed in the article are: construction of affordable housing, provision of health and child care, increasing the minimum wage, creation of more jobs and better education.

“Barak and Pagni never present any specific evidence to back up their broad generalizations about the ‘causes’ or scope of poverty in Alabama. Their generalizations, in fact, are a localization of the purported findings of some poorly done national studies. Those national studies—purporting to show that the middle class is declining, homelessness increasing, manufacturing disappearing, etc.—received a great deal of publicity when the findings were released.

“Those studies and findings have since been highly discredited because of faulty methodology and reasoning. That has not been well-publicized.

“Among the newest findings: When ranked by income, the middle three-fifths of the population receive about 52 percent of the total national income—a proportion virtually unchanged since 1947 when such statistics began being kept; for every 10 percent increase in the minimum wage, there is a loss of between 100,000 and 200,000 jobs; from 1981 through 1986, the proportion of all blacks who have jobs went up by 5.5 percent—while the increase for whites was only 2.5 percent.

“The coldness of poverty has but one cause: the lack of the heat of economic activity. The real power of a free market society is its ability to create wealth. Barak and Pagni don’t understand that and never touch on proposals that would create wealth and lift people from poverty. Instead, they propose merely the same old failed statist solutions of redistribution income.

“If Barak’s and Pagni’s proposals are ever adopted, then we will see a declining middle class.”

Intriguing Subject, But Lacks Coherent Message

If an author cannot concisely summarize what, essentially, the basic message of his or her project is, then I would seriously question the worth of the work in question. And an acceptable strategy to accomplish that summarization is not trussing up the lack of a coherent point with fancy words and numerous citations and references that amount, essentially, to academic name-dropping. This, unfortunately, is how Liria Evangelista spends the vast majority of her book.
Original thoughts are few and far between. "As so and so says," or "Utilizing the framework of such-and-such" is the norm. The book can at best be described as rather inauspicious, at worst as a self-congratulatory academic inside joke.
Evangelista sets out to examine works of art (written, recorded, and filmed) created in the aftermath of Argentina's military dictatorship of 1976-1983, the euphemistically self-dubbed "Process of National Reorganization."
This is definitely not to say that the subject is unworthy of further exploration. I think it is the very rarest of subjects (if any at all) that does not merit further explanation. And Argentina's military dictatorship had a profound effect on that nation's citizenry, civil society and national self-image, as Evangelista acknowledges.
But Evangelista never forges a point, never makes a generalization - no matter how broad - of what connects or does not connect the novels, films and rock songs she examines. Indeed, she offers no formal conclusion whatsoever. Her book just dead-ends, as do her futile attempts to bring clarity to a time of national turmoil.

Unlike the Encyclopedia of Earth Science (LJ 10/15/96), which provides information explaining currently accepted facts and theories, this work is a survey of the history of geosciences that shows the evolution of ideas about the earth. Covering a wide range of disciplines (geology, geography, geophysics, oceanography, meteorology, etc.), the 230-plus articles describe historical explanations of earthly occurrences, important institutions, major historical issues, and even topics that do not fall within mainstream science such as occult philosophy and magic. The emphasis is on Western science, although some other cultures are represented. Biographical articles were purposely omitted, so a name index that lists almost all the individuals mentioned is included. The articles are well written and understandable to the non-expert, and each has a bibliography to help the reader find more information. There is also a section discussing other useful resources for research in the history of geosciences. A subject index and a listing of entries by broad categories help the user locate the desired information. Overall, this is a very interesting set for those interested in the history of sciences. For readers of history, for people interested in the Earth

I am the editor of the book and just want to put in a good word so people might know what to expect from it. First, it is two volumes, long and richly detailed -- so it's worth the price. The authors --all 140-- are very well informed on their various geosciences but also on their histories. How was the geological column unravelled and where did those names come from? How have storms or northern lights or ocean currents been understood in different times and places? How did our expansion into space affect our understanding of the Earth? All of these stories and many more are told in these volumes in ways that both inform and challenge. These stories are also authoritative reflections of the "state of the art" in history of Earth Science. So if you are a student or a professional historian of science, these volumes provide a basis for further research. There is a "Guide to Resources for Research in the History of Geosciences". An alphabetical index includes over 2000 people who have contributed to geoscience, including their full names and birth-death dates in most cases.
I would appreciate hearing from anyone who would like to know more about "Sciences of the Earth" or about this field in history.

I have used this book several times for a quick reference, more thorough reviews and as a bibliographic source. It has been invaluable in all respects. In most cases it was the only reference I could find on discinplinary history or aspects of that history.

Very good compilation of in-depth essays on Sondheim works

This volume of 14 essays, by 14 different authors, on selected works of Stephen Sondheim is aimed principally at an academic audience, and does not cover all of Sondheim's musicals individually. I also use the word "works" rather than musicals, because the essay by Douglas Braverman covers not a musical, but Sondheim's one original movie screenplay, "The Last of Sheila", although Braverman does tie this screenplay back to Sondheim's musicals, not surprisingly.

For the most part, even though the discussions are quite in depth and "academic" in that sense, the essays generally avoid literary jargon, so that Sondheim devotees or fanatics who aren't necessarily literary academics can also potentially derive much enjoyment from this collection. The one essay which lays on the literary terminology rather more is Gary Konas' essay on "Passion". To a lesser extent, Barbara Means Fraser also uses a few "heavier" academic terms of analysis, but since she fairly breezes through each musical in her analysis of the role of the chorus in Sondheim's musicals, there almost isn't time to get bogged down. I must confess as a small matter of personal taste that I found Judith Schlesinger's use of the line from "Sweeney Todd" of 'Don't I know you, mister?' as her essay closer very arch and self-conscious, in an otherwise good essay.

Although this volume certainly isn't "casual" reading, it is accessible enough for the intelligent lay-reader who is willing to focus on the task at hand. Sondheim fans will need no recommendation from me.

Patricia H. Hinchey is Professor of Education at Penn State and a Research Fellow at the National Education Policy Center (NEPC) at the University of Colorado, Boulder. She holds a doctorate from Teachers College, Columbia University, and has authored numerous articles as well as several books on topics including critical theory, education for civic engagement, action research, and teacher assessment. Dr. Hinchey is also former director of a professional development unit for faculty on Penn State's regional campuses.

I had great hopes for this book

I had great hopes for this book to get an overview of Cassirer and Langer, but it is a difficult book to review -- Cassirer has had a minor revival recently (conferences, a biography, and a couple of books about the Heidegger/Cassirer debate in Davos), but is now mostly unknown, at least in North America; and Langer, who had a major vogue awhile ago, has practically disappeared from most people's view -- so anything about them is worthy. Also this book is full of detail about their theories. But having said that, it is very poorly written and a struggle to get through. I can only assume that English is not the author's first language: punctuation is spotty, many sentences are hardly English, and it is difficult to make literal sense of some of the arguments. I find it hard to believe that Routledge allowed this book to go through without some serious editorial scrutiny beforehand.

I would suggest that the interested reader head for Cassirer and Langer themselves: both of them wrote well and straightforwardly.

Cassirer and Langer, great philosophic minds.

This is actually quite a useful book on Cassirer and Langer. Much discussion of Cassirer's sense of myth in relation to other theories, as well as how the philosophy of myth underlies the whole philosophy of symbolic form. Unfortunately it is greatly overpriced and it is doubtful that Routledge will print a paper ed. Cassirer and Langer should be better known but it is unlikely that that will happen, what with the academic predilection for logical positivism in the form of analytic philosophy, or for exitentialism and materialism. Cassirer himself should be known as one of the great philosophers of our time. The difficulties that the previous reviewer mentions are not actually due to bad or unclear writing, but to a lack of proof reading by the publisher. Should not be so expensive, as said.
