Wonderful Contribution to Childhood Studies

The Poetics of Childhood is Roni Natov's most recent contribution to the study of children's literature. The book is remarkable in its breadth and depth, considering, as she states in the introduction,

the literature of childhood through a variety of texts both those conceived and written for children and those that engage an exclusively adult readership. Its focus is those works that provide a shared area where adult and child come together... The majority of works considered here belong as much to adults as to children, as the world of childhood belongs to adults in memory as well as to children temporally. (3)

The close readings of texts from William Blake to Lewis Carroll, Maurice Sendak to Faith Ringgold, Gertrude Stein to Arundhati Roy, Lolita to Harry Potter, allow the reader to consider not only the literature intended for children, but work through a concept, a poetics of childhood itself as experienced by the child and remembered by the adult. Throughout the book, Natov reveals a profound respect for children's books and childhood and children. Lois R. Kuznets, former President of the Children's Literature Association, lovingly ends a review published in the Children's Literature Association Quarterly stating "Natov displays both an acute sensitivity to the joys and pains of childhood-immediate and remembered-and a strong sense of responsibility to the child reader as well as to those adults who empower childhood and children."

Natov's thoughtful analysis of the literature of childhood in Poetics, marks a good first step in "Childhood Studies," which will make as lasting a contribution to the scholarship of childhood as The Lion and the Unicorn, the journal of children's literature scholarship founded by Natov and her long-time collaborator, Geraldine DeLuca. Most importantly, I think, the book advocates a respectful and sensitive means of addressing children and childhood, recognizing the trauma that children around the world face as part of their everyday lives. In her concluding paragraph, Natov argues-perhaps even pleads-that we advocate for and protect our children: "In its broadest sense, then, the literature of childhood represents a challenge to the world. In the voices of children, in their questions about things that seem unfair, this literature demands that we look again at the crippling and divisive forces of racism and sexism. In its depictions of children suffering and struggling against the bleakest and most unstable conditions, it is an indictment of the barbaric effects of poverty on their lives. In response to our current world that criminalizes them, in response to our polluted, wartorn, power-hungry world, the literature of childhood, in its varied imagined landscapes, suggests an inclusive society in which children can find a safe and creative way to live" (262).

In The Poetics of Childhood, Dr. Natov masterfully interweaves archetypal themes of child-centered poetry into a visionary work, which is itself poetic in its aesthetic depth, eloquence, and economy of expression. While it honors the directness, clarity, and playfulness of the child's world, it is simultaneously imbued with the wisdom and maturity of erudite scholarship. The author conveys a vast, comprehensive knowledge of the topic through poignant narratives of beauty and imagination, providing fresh insights into the work of even the best-known poets, and providing new perspectives on the nature of the psyche. Through her literary mastery, Dr. Natov brilliantly plumbs the depths of human consciousness, illuminating the divine in the concrete, and evoking the fantastic in the ordinary. She approaches even the most fundamental themes of childhood with profound respect and revence (as one would approach something sacred), and treats each poem as a living, breathing, art form, with its own life story to tell.
Far beyond informational, The Poetics of Childhood is transformational. It is a moving testament to the resilliance of the human, childhood spirit, which prevails even in the midst of the most intolerable conditions, through its innate artistry and boundless love. As the author portrays dialectic struggles between shadow and light, internal and external, past and present, conscious and unconscious, and body and soul, she simultaneously reveals how each of these dichotomies is ulitmately transcended through the creative process inherent in child-centered poetry. In this way, the reader gains an appreciation of these poetic works as reflections of, and as pathways to, self-integration, healing, and spiritual development.
Because Dr. Natov is forthright about her own life context and peresonal values, the reader is continually aware of her authenticity and genuine presence. The Poetics of Childhood is a compelling, inspirational work, capable of enriching the lives of artists, scholars, and healers of all disciplines. Truly, it provides possibilities for relating in new ways to the child each of us has been, and which each of us still is.

About the Author

Richard M. Lerner is the Bergstrom Chair in Applied Developmental Science and the Director of the Applied Developmental Science Institute in the Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Development at Tufts University. A developmental psychologist, Lerner received a Ph.D. in 1971 from the City University of New York. He has been a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences and is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Psychological Association, and American Psychological Society. Prior to joining Tufts University, he held administrative posts at Michigan State University, Pennsylvania State University, and Boston College, where he was the Anita L. Brennan Professor of Education and the Director of the Center for Child, Family, and Community Partnerships. In 1994-95, he held the Tyner Eminent Scholar Chair in the Human Sciences at Florida State University. He is author or editor of 55 books and more than 360 scholarly articles and chapters. He edited Volume 1 ("Theoretical Models of Human Development") for the fifth edition of the "Handbook of Child Psychology". He is the founding editor of the "Journal of Research on Adolescence" and "Applied Developmental Science". He is known for his theory of, and research about, relations between life-span human development and contextual or ecological change. Lerner has done foundational studies of adolescents relations with their peer, family, school, and community contexts and is a leader in the study of public policies and community-based programs aimed at the promotion of positive youth development. With Sage, he authored "America s Youth in Crisis: Challenges and Options for Programs and Policies" (1995), co-edited the four-volume "Handbook of Applied Developmental Science", and is co-editing the two-volume "Encyclopedia of Applied Developmental Science".

Franklin Ng is Professor of Anthropology at California State University, Fresno. He holds a B.A. degree from Johns Hopkins University, an A.M. degree from Harvard University, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Chicago. The editor of The Asian American Encyclopedia, he is also the co-editor of New Visions in Asian American Studies: Diversity, Community, Power, the author of Chinese Americans Struggle for Equality, and has written articles for anthologies and journals. He serves as the editor of the Journal of American-East Asian Relations and is on the editorial board of the Amerasia Journal.

For 45 years after World War II, a divided Germany was the symbol and the ideological battleground of the cold war. Since reunification in 1990, it has fought some old demons and taken a strong leadership role in the European Union. Simply put, Germany is a difficult nation to understand.

The editors of this work recognize that Germany's complex paths to its present state need to be drawn together. The result is an encyclopedia of some 1,300 entries by more than 400 international scholars that draws a wonderfully detailed picture of the German nation from its political unification in 1871 to the fall of the Berlin Wall. Arranged alphabetically, the entries look at significant people, places, events, institutions, and issues. Coverage is broad, embracing the arts, the economy, the media, the sciences, and society as well as politics. Entries are necessarily concise, generally from one-half page to two pages, but quite detailed in coverage. Each entry is signed and appended with a short bibliography. Excellent work on modern German history

This is not only a thoroughly researched but also a precise and truefully documented encyclopedia about the history of Germany since its foundation in 1871 till the reunification in 1990. It is amazing how much effort the author put in this excellent work. a must have for any departmen of German at colleges and universities and definitely a treasure in the hands of any scholar or teacher of German.

The penetration of corporations into schools

The author finds that the direct involvement of corporations with the primary and secondary schools of America hardly enhances the education of students. The rhetoric of "win-win" and of "choice" in school-business partnerships and in privatized schools is empty, misleading sloganeering.
Every school-business partnership described in the book shows that the primary interest is in promoting products and corporate images whether in the form of product giveaways, the plastering of corporate logos on school property, or the penetration of the school day by private television networks advertising products appealing to students. In some cases, there is clear intent in creating interest on the part of students in entry-level clerical or service jobs such as those found in grocery stores or in the fast-food business. One grocery chain hires teachers for summer work expressly to persuade them to help in recruitment efforts among student populations.
The motive for privatization, or corporate-managed or -owned schools, is purely one of profit. Privatization is promoted as enhancing "choice." But providing choices for, say, special students or those interested in extra-curricular activities is costly. Privatized schools invariably reduce curriculum choices and require teachers to closely follow course blueprints with the primary goal being one of inculcating facts useful for scoring high on standardized tests. High test-scores bolster the product, that is, the school, that the corporation is selling. Broader and more nebulous educational goals are shoved aside because they are viewed as a drain on the bottom line. An additional consequence of private school choice is the inevitable segmentation of student bodies along racial and class lines as the ability to pay excludes some from having actual "choice."
In addition to specific corporate involvement in schools, the author is concerned with the predominance of business thinking in the broader culture and its impact on our school systems. It has become a standard view among political and business elites that the essential purpose of schools is to train future employees. According to them, the primary focus of schools should be on teaching "skills" to students that are directly useful in work places. In this line of thinking schools are not the locus for wide-ranging intellectual endeavor. Teachers as intellectuals are not needed. Instead, they are seen as essentially education clerks, as employees, that follow management's direction in producing a product. Students are said to get an education, a product, closing the circle on the commodification of education. In another vein of corporate determination, the textbook industry sanitizes book content to ensure greater book sales which is contrary to the spirit of open inquiry.
In the face such reductionistic and regimented thinking, the author pushes throughout the book for the spread of "critical transitivity" in our schools whereby a critical and flexible approach by both teachers and students is taken in acquiring broad knowledge. He is concerned with what finds as the oligopolistic nature of the United States. He sees schools as being centers for the education of democratic practice and where critiques of our culture, capitalism, and social injustice are mounted.
While the author seems to be on solid ground to decry the move to quantify schools by simplified, standardized testing and the de-professionalization of teaching, it is worrisome to see what amounts to a social agenda being proposed as a replacement. Children and teenagers are not equipped to engage in social critique; they simply do not have enough worldly experience to have informed, independent opinions. One would hope that the author is not suggesting that the influencing of young minds with the social agenda of teachers has more merit than business-imposed thinking. It is for adult citizens to make democracy a reality in the political process, in workplaces, and in the broader culture including schools. Meanwhile, there is much for students to learn beyond workplace "skills" long before they become agents for social change.
The book seems to be grabbing for too much. It details actual corporate involvement in schools; it is concerned with the dominance of business thought; and it wants schools themselves to be the agents to change all of that. And those topics get intermixed. Also, at times the book can get a little overloaded with academic jargon as the author sprinkles in talk about techno-rationality, non-propositional versus propositional knowledge, consumer materialism, and intransitivity versus critical transitivity, etc. But for the most part the author's points are on the money. Our school systems have gotten derailed by some very dubious thinking. This book contributes to understanding the situation.

Where Has a Book Like This Been All This Time?

A school teacher, I never even thought that our school-business partnerships could be anything but "good." We were told they were "win-win" situations, and we seemed to benefit. Boyles' book, however, points out many shortcomings that aren't so obvious. It's in the third chapter when he provides example after example of business partnerships and then proceeds to reveal the errors and the major issues that teachers and students should know...but just don't really pay attention (in my case, anyway). I got a paperback version of the book for $22, and it was worth every penny. I'm going into my classes this fall armed with information about grocery store gimmicks and corporate "donations" that I intend to pose to my students...which is the author's real point. It's a great read...a little academic at times, but humorous and compelling.
