"Created to provide a wide variety of useful information...for scholars, students, and general readers interested in postwar Europe," this impressive two-volume work concerns Western and Eastern Europe, Russia, and the successor states to the former Soviet Union. Cook (history, Tulane Univ.) has overseen the collaboration of 286 scholars from 30 countries to produce a resource whose versatility underlies its utility. The subject guide suggests the diversity of the 1700 entries, which, while focusing on politics and geography, also include topics and personalities in the arts, humanities, and literature. Although not as inclusive as Derek Urwin's Dictionary of European History and Politics Since 1945 (Addison-Wesley, 1996), this is a work of far greater scope and depth. Among its shortcomings are a disappointingly sketchy chronology of postwar political events and unbalanced treatment of certain subjects. One would have expected, for example, more expansive discussions of the European Union and NATO, which are relegated to less than six and two pages, respectively. Notwithstanding, this commendable achievement is a useful contribution to the reference literature on contemporary Europe that will be welcomed especially by academic libraries. The world has changed immensely since 1945, and post-World War II Europe has been at the forefront of incredible seismic shifts. The aim of this encyclopedia is to be a comprehensive survey of the political, economic, social, and cultural changes and trends. Employing 286 scholars from 30 countries, its geographic scope ranges "from Scandinavia in the north to Italy in the south, and from Iceland in the west to Russia in the east."
The 1,700 entries are arranged alphabetically. Volume 1 begins with a subject guide that organizes entry headings under broad subject categories such as "Alliances," "Art," "Cold War," and "Crime." From this array one can see the political emphasis of the encyclopedia: "Political Figures" is the category with the most entries (two-thirds of the content, in fact), broken down by individual countries and then by names. The subject guide allows the reader to scan all of the entries in a few minutes, making the encyclopedia an efficient browsing source. Another useful feature is the "Chronology of Major Political Events Since 1945," which starts with the January 1, 1945, recognition of the provisional government of Poland by the Soviet Union and ends with the March 2000 election of Vladimir Putin as president of Russia.
Encyclopedia entries run from a short paragraph for a biography of Blagoje Adzic, who was a close collaborator with Slobodan Milosevic, to several pages for a major figure, such as Konrad Adenauer. Besides the biographical entries, examples of other topics that are represented include Chernobyl, Ethnic cleansing in Croatia and Bosnia, European Union, Muslims in Europe, Neo-Nazism, Soccer (football) hooliganism, and Tourism. Country articles are divided into separate essays that discuss topics such as the economy and the press. Coverage of some subjects is inconsistent. For example, there are nine country articles that contain sections on cinema, but no discussion of cinema in the entries for Great Britain or France. Entries for geographical entities are accompanied by small maps. Bibliographies are attached to most entries, with non-English sources as prevalent as English-language sources. Some bibliographies include Web sites. The 59-page index is quite detailed.
Europe Since 1945: An Encyclopedia is a resource that will be used in academic and public libraries by students and general readers needing background information on recent European trends, issues, and history.
