As the title implies, this reference focuses on contemporary topics and thus does not offer, for example, as much history of removal from tribal lands but how the victims have adjusted and coped with their forced relocation. Though a few entries are concise paragraphs, most are several pages long, and all are followed by brief bibliographies for further reading. The text is written in a firm, unemotional manner that loads each sentence with factual matter. Some maps are interspersed throughout to show tribal locations, and a few photographs illustrate such visually oriented sections as film and video and the arts. The book is useful in presenting up-to-date overviews of subjects of current concern, like casino ownership and fishing rights, in addition to offering sociological entries on such topics as alcohol abuse and image. At 58 pages, the index is extensive but could have been more comprehensive; in a fact-filled volume such as this, some useful information in the text could not be located through the index. However, the encyclopedic format makes finding pertinent topics easy, and a separate list of entries by subject makes related entries accessible. All entries are signed, and 40 percent are by Native Americans. Close competitors are The Native North American Almanac (LJ 5/1/94) and The Native American Almanac (LJ 11/1/93). The almanacs are more historically oriented and include directory information, while the new volume is preferable for current articles describing concerns for Native Americans. Highly recommended for all libraries.

It is important to note that more than 40 percent of the articles were written by Native Americans. Overview articles appear on such topics as art, education, government, and health, which contain see also references. Other articles cover such topics as the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, the Bureau of Indian Affairs schools, the National Congress of American Indians, and Red Power from an Indian perspective. The largest number of articles are on individual tribes; these are often accompanied by charts and graphs and vary in length from less than one-half page for Nanticoke to five pages for Navajo. Extensive bibliographies accompany every entry. In addition, there are more than 20 full-page line maps and many black-and-white photographs. All entries are signed, and the authors' credentials are provided. At the beginning of the work, a classified list of articles lists them under such headings as Art, Government Policy, Law, and Religion. The detailed index provides subject access.

This is an easy-to-use reference work. It is an excellent source for hard-to-find information about lesser-known such tribes as the Hoh and the Tunica-Biloxi, but it has limited coverage of individuals. The editor indicates that biographical material is beyond the scope of the work, as is coverage of Canadian Natives. Since this work provides up-to-date information on tribal groups, it could easily replace books with limited coverage. Native American Almanac [RBB Ja 15 94] is a more popular treatment of the topic and does not provide detailed information on individual tribes. The Native North American Almanac [RBB My 1 94] has both historical and contemporary coverage. It also contains biographies and directory information. Libraries, high school and up, in need of a scholarly treatment of this topic will want to consider Native America in the Twentieth Century.

An Essential Reference Tool

As an anthropologist and an information professional, I highly recommend this book for anyone researching or studying Native Americans, historical or contemporary. What makes this an essential reference tool, in my opinion, is that it provides a variety of perspectives -- many of the authors are Native American, in addition to anthropologists, historians, etc. One must keep these various biases in mind when using this resource, but this diversity of voices is an example of what makes this source unique. Additionally, the entries offer many great historical summaries but with a focus on contemporary Native America that is difficult to find in other Native American reference tools that tend to focus on the pre-contact and early contact period lifeways and history of various tribal entities rather than modern issues and tribal life.

This is an important reference book on the American Indian in the 20th century. However some entries lack substance and also lack information. There could have been much more dates and facts and information on legislation and population and demographics and other things. This is the standard and essential endodontic textbook!

This book is a classic in endodontics. A must for every dental student- you probably dont need any other books! Very thorough. A bit too much on infection control and diagnosis, and a bit too little on more modern technological "gizmos" is common use. Color photos would be good, but the contributors consist of the most notable endodontists.

More Appropriate for post-doc students

We read this text from cover to cover for our pre-doc endo course at NSU. To say the least, the text was wordy and often got distracted with details that are insignificant to the general practitioner and unnecessary for the pre-doc student. The faculty at nova have promised to review other texts in preparation for next year's class. Trust me, this book will force you to wade through a sea of useless information to find the clinically pertinant information. Don't waste your time unless you are obsessed with details. I hope this was helpful.

Great Pictures of access openings

I still use this book when I do endo. The pictures of access openings for EVERY TOOTH are a great help. There is a page or 2 devoted to each tooth, with many possible canal variations, and average canal lengths. Good for a beginner, and for someone who still hasn't done enough endos to memorize the average lenght of every canal.

The entry of the United States into World War I in 1917 was the deciding factor in the Allies' victory of the following year. Venzon (editor of General Smedly Darlington Butler, Greenwood, 1992) and a panel of some 200 contributors, mostly American academics, have collaborated on this third volume of Garland's "Military History of the United States" series. Their work chronicles the military and civil involvement of the United States in this "war to end all wars." Biography, economics, civil rights, women's issues, foreign relations, battles, armaments, and conferences are among the topics included. Arrangement is alphabetical, and most articles are brief?between one column and a page. One exception is the very long corporate entry for the U.S. Army, followed by major subcategories, e.g., division. Most articles include brief bibliographies. There are six maps, but no other illustrations. The enormous contribution made by volunteer organizations is well covered in articles on the American National Red Cross, YM/YWCA, Salvation Army, American Library Association, and others. Separate articles on women in the American Expeditionary Force, U.S. Army Nurse Corps, and other subjects remind us of the role played by American women both at the front and at home. The difficulties and accomplishments of black Americans during that racist era are also well documented. Peace and antiwar sentiment is reflected in articles on individuals and organizations, e.g., conscientious objectors, Woman's Peace Party, Scott Nearing, etc. More cross-references and see references would be useful in retrieving some interesting material embedded in longer articles. No literary authors are included, although a number of them?Ernest Hemingway, John Dos Passos, and Charles Nordhoff?served as ambulance drivers or medics, and their experiences are prime examples of the role played by volunteer noncombatants. For illustrations and additional maps, libraries should see Bruce Anthony's An Illustrated Companion to the First World War (Viking, 1990) and Oxford's Atlas of World War I (Oxford Univ. Pr., 1991). Excellent companion or stand alone source.

This encylopedia is an exhaustive work on an historical turning point that is overshadowed by the Second World War. This work contains biographical sketches of key participants, detailed explanations of significant battle units and troop manuevers, background on significant weaponry, and details on contemporary popular culture. I find myself reaching for it to read by itself as much as I do for looking up a reference found in another book. Americans who participated in WWI were always ashamed of the carnage and the lack of a clear resolution which ultimately led to WWII. Thankfully, this book allows us to appreciate the lost generation's bravery and ability to deal with the slaughter and destruction. This volume has done much to bring my grandfather's war into the same clear focus I've always viewed my father's war. Each entry contains a bibliography.

A Great work about WWI

What a wonderful find! It arrived early and more than met my expectations. It is exceptionally organized and well written. I was able to trace the movements of my great uncle's unit. I had been looking for something like this for a long time. Its biographies and explanations of the times and people are fantastic. The book is a great companion book for the others that I have on World War I.
