The penetration of corporations into schools

The author finds that the direct involvement of corporations with the primary and secondary schools of America hardly enhances the education of students. The rhetoric of "win-win" and of "choice" in school-business partnerships and in privatized schools is empty, misleading sloganeering.
Every school-business partnership described in the book shows that the primary interest is in promoting products and corporate images whether in the form of product giveaways, the plastering of corporate logos on school property, or the penetration of the school day by private television networks advertising products appealing to students. In some cases, there is clear intent in creating interest on the part of students in entry-level clerical or service jobs such as those found in grocery stores or in the fast-food business. One grocery chain hires teachers for summer work expressly to persuade them to help in recruitment efforts among student populations.
The motive for privatization, or corporate-managed or -owned schools, is purely one of profit. Privatization is promoted as enhancing "choice." But providing choices for, say, special students or those interested in extra-curricular activities is costly. Privatized schools invariably reduce curriculum choices and require teachers to closely follow course blueprints with the primary goal being one of inculcating facts useful for scoring high on standardized tests. High test-scores bolster the product, that is, the school, that the corporation is selling. Broader and more nebulous educational goals are shoved aside because they are viewed as a drain on the bottom line. An additional consequence of private school choice is the inevitable segmentation of student bodies along racial and class lines as the ability to pay excludes some from having actual "choice."
In addition to specific corporate involvement in schools, the author is concerned with the predominance of business thinking in the broader culture and its impact on our school systems. It has become a standard view among political and business elites that the essential purpose of schools is to train future employees. According to them, the primary focus of schools should be on teaching "skills" to students that are directly useful in work places. In this line of thinking schools are not the locus for wide-ranging intellectual endeavor. Teachers as intellectuals are not needed. Instead, they are seen as essentially education clerks, as employees, that follow management's direction in producing a product. Students are said to get an education, a product, closing the circle on the commodification of education. In another vein of corporate determination, the textbook industry sanitizes book content to ensure greater book sales which is contrary to the spirit of open inquiry.
In the face such reductionistic and regimented thinking, the author pushes throughout the book for the spread of "critical transitivity" in our schools whereby a critical and flexible approach by both teachers and students is taken in acquiring broad knowledge. He is concerned with what finds as the oligopolistic nature of the United States. He sees schools as being centers for the education of democratic practice and where critiques of our culture, capitalism, and social injustice are mounted.
While the author seems to be on solid ground to decry the move to quantify schools by simplified, standardized testing and the de-professionalization of teaching, it is worrisome to see what amounts to a social agenda being proposed as a replacement. Children and teenagers are not equipped to engage in social critique; they simply do not have enough worldly experience to have informed, independent opinions. One would hope that the author is not suggesting that the influencing of young minds with the social agenda of teachers has more merit than business-imposed thinking. It is for adult citizens to make democracy a reality in the political process, in workplaces, and in the broader culture including schools. Meanwhile, there is much for students to learn beyond workplace "skills" long before they become agents for social change.
The book seems to be grabbing for too much. It details actual corporate involvement in schools; it is concerned with the dominance of business thought; and it wants schools themselves to be the agents to change all of that. And those topics get intermixed. Also, at times the book can get a little overloaded with academic jargon as the author sprinkles in talk about techno-rationality, non-propositional versus propositional knowledge, consumer materialism, and intransitivity versus critical transitivity, etc. But for the most part the author's points are on the money. Our school systems have gotten derailed by some very dubious thinking. This book contributes to understanding the situation.

Where Has a Book Like This Been All This Time?

A school teacher, I never even thought that our school-business partnerships could be anything but "good." We were told they were "win-win" situations, and we seemed to benefit. Boyles' book, however, points out many shortcomings that aren't so obvious. It's in the third chapter when he provides example after example of business partnerships and then proceeds to reveal the errors and the major issues that teachers and students should know...but just don't really pay attention (in my case, anyway). I got a paperback version of the book for $22, and it was worth every penny. I'm going into my classes this fall armed with information about grocery store gimmicks and corporate "donations" that I intend to pose to my students...which is the author's real point. It's a great read...a little academic at times, but humorous and compelling.

"INTO THE WORDS"

Being but another worshipper at the alter of Stephen Sondheim, I was eager to read anything about him which went beyond your typical stage review.
This book was given to me as a gift and I eagerly opened it hoping to find hidden treasure about Sondheim and his work.
The book was not quite what I expected and at the same time EXACTLY what I expected. What Goodhart promises in the introduction, he delivers - a serious delving into the works of Sondheim, treating his musicals as literature. What I didn't expect was just how thoroughly the writers (Goodhart employs several essayists) would analyze character and plot.
One essay that comes to mind is one written on "Sweeney Todd." I really thought I knew as much as there was to know about this masterwork - WRONG. The essayist gives great detail into the psychological make-up of these characters...much more information that a layman or actor like myself can begin to understand. At times the analysis was clinical I had to back up and re-read the passage to get a grasp on what was being explored.
I've decided that the book will provide a wonderful reference to keep on my shelf for my own work on Sondheim musicals, but for simple pleasure reading, this book may not be appropriate unless you have your PHD.

not really worth getting

not bad, but not as entertaining as sondheim: a casebook. some of the analyses were quite obtuse (e.g. the lacanian analysis of sweeney todd and the argument that passion is about sondheim's relationship with his mother). i thought one of the more interesting essays was the first one about passion, but there weren't many others that were particularly relevant or insightful.

I ordered this book as a possible source for an essay on the works on Stephen Sondheim, unsure of what I'd find. What the book contained was exactly what it says: essays on the works of Stephen Sondheim. The essays varied from those concerning only one musical (the first six essays) to others which discussed over arching themes in his canon (the latter six essays). That being said, having had some previous experience with the plays (reading them, seeing them, knowing the stories, etc.) is necessary. This is not a history of Stephen Sondheim's works. It is an in-depth look at them. Finally, an analysis of Sondheim's works paralleling the analytical work done for all the other great playwrights of the twentieth century! The book covers most of Sondheim's composer-lyricist career in musical theater up to the mid-1990s. It does not include analysis of West Side Story, Do I Hear a Waltz?, Bounce/Road Show, or Gypsy. All that being said, it is a great book for Sondheim aficionados, dramaturgs, and Sondheim fans.

J. Gordon Melton, one of the editors of this encyclopedia, has compiled numerous reference works on religion in the U.S., the best known of which is the Encyclopedia of American Religions (3d ed., Gale, 1989). Coeditors Murphy and Gary L. Ward are affiliated respectively with Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary and the Institute for the Study of American Religion, which is headed by Melton. Approximately 30 contributors prepared articles devoted to aspects of African American religions.

The encyclopedia includes three types of entries: biographical sketches of 773 African American religious leaders; 341 entries on African American denominations and religious organizations (including white churches with significant black memberships and educational institutions); and topical articles on important aspects of African American religious life (e.g., African American Christians during the Colonial Era, Music in the African American Church). The biographical sketches range from a paragraph to several pages for such major figures as Martin Luther King. Entries for the larger African American denominations are likewise several pages in length, as are most of the topical articles.

The alphabetically arranged entries are preceded by three introductory essays and a chronology of major events in black religious history from 1618 to 1991. A bibliography of 303 major texts on African American religion follows the entries. Most of the entries conclude with a list of references specifically related to that subject. A directory section provides the current addresses and telephone numbers of the national headquarters of the churches and organizations covered in the encyclopedia.

In addition to the name and subject index, a "Biographical Cross-Index by Religious Tradition" lists all persons whose biographical sketches appear in the encyclopedia under the names of the denominations with which they have been associated. While the introduction makes reference to "30 or so major topical entries," examination of the alphabetical list of entries and the index identified only about half that number. A separate listing of the topical articles would have been useful.

The Directory of African American Religious Bodies [RBB D 15 91] claimed to be the first comprehensive reference work exclusively devoted to the African American religious experience. Although there is some duplication with the book under review, the two titles are complementary in significant ways. The unique contribution of the Encyclopedia is the biographies of religious leaders. The Directory, on the other hand, covers almost three times as many religious bodies and organizations, and users of the Encyclopedia are referred to the Directory for "more detailed listings of names and addresses within the African American religious community." The Directory was recommended for "larger academic and public libraries and for other libraries where there is interest in black religious bodies." The Encyclopedia is appropriate for a broader spectrum of libraries.

Molecular Biology of the Cell : The Problems Book is a great book for biology students as well as those interested in really learning the concepts behind the theory. This book is extremely detailed in its questions as it vigorously tests the knowledge learned from it's companion textbook, Molecular Biology of the Cell. This book has tremendously helped in my understanding of the major chapters of the main textbook (chapters 6-end). It provides a thorough breakdown on the types of questions that it asks. For example, the questions in the book are structured by True/False, matching, as well as essay formats. This provides for a varied way of learning the essential material. I highly recommend this book for those students preparing for standardized exams as well as those taking a course in molecular or cell biology.

This book has tremendously helped in my understanding of the major chapters of the main textbook (chapters 6-end). It provides a thorough breakdown on the types of questions that it asks. For example, the questions in the book are structured by True/False, matching, as well as essay formats. This provides for a varied way of learning the essential material. I highly recommend this book for those students preparing for standardized exams as well as those taking a course in molecular or cell biology.
