A Clear View

I found the book to be an eye opening, clear view of racially segregated voting patterns. It also gave an insider's view of the difficulties minorities face when mounting competitive political campaigns. The book is a must read for anyone with political aspirations at any level. It also serves as a primer for young African-American voters. Anyone who thinks that "my vote doesn't count", will realize the importance of every vote cast. The book also proves that hard work and strong ideals, must aslo be accompanied by dogged determination. For a collegiate level text, it was a very enjoyable read.

A Thought-Provoking Analysis of Urban Politics

Race, Power, and Political Emergence in Memphis is a thought-provoking analysis of race relations in the South. It is also one of few books which informs readers about the unique politics of Memphis. However, the book discusses politics in other urban cities as well and thus provides a framework by which Memphis politics can be analyzed in relation to politics in other U.S. cities. It is an excellent book and is very well-written.

Great, thought-provoking, and challenging--but enjoyable rea

I was a close friend of the author, and helped prepare the manuscript for publication after she passed away. This book will be of great relevance to anyone interested in history, museography, communication, anthropology, ethnography, and art history. It is an ambitious and scholarly attempt to review the history and practices of museum exhibitions of Native Canadians, and addresses fundamental questions: when and why are objects considered "art" vs. "artifacts"? How should non-Native museums and curators approach the challenges of exhibiting cultures they do not belong to? Building on Clifford's art/artifact, authentic/inauthentic analytical axes, Moira's study enriches our understanding of how Western culture has chosen to re-present the history and cultures of Native peoples in Canada--in settings where traditionally there has not been space allowed for Native voices themselves to be heard. Although the book is focused on Canada, the issues are relevant to Native populations anywhere in the world. Needless to say, I strongly recommend this book!

About the Author
Everett Ferguson received S.T.B. and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard University, where he was Honorary John Harvard Fellow. He has taught most of his career at Abilene Christian University, where he has twice been honored in his college as Teacher of the Year. Everett Ferguson has been president of the North American Patristic Society, served on the Council of the American Society of Church History, and is now on the Council of the Association Internationale d'ftudes Patristiques. His books include Backgrounds of Early Christianity, 2nd ed. (1993), Early Christians Speak, rev. ed. (1987), and (with A.J. Malherbe) Gregory of Nyssa: Life of Moses(1378). He was founding editor of The Second Century, co-editor of Journal of Early Christian Studies, and general editor of Garland's 18-volume Studies in Early Christianity(1993).

An excellent, handy quick reference

Trying to find out which Church council condemned Nestorianism? Need some background on Maximian of Ravenna or a quick history of the martyrdom of Perpetua and Felicitas? This volume is an excellent reference. Having used it as a resource for apologetical endeavors, I have found it supremely useful when confronted with historical personages or Christian teachings that were unfamiliar. Bibliographies at the end of each entry allow easy access to further research. I found two drawbacks: The first is regarding the large number of contributors - this ensures that the quality of the entries is somewhat uneven throughout. The second is the occasional 'political correctness' which creeps in to some entries - but I suppose that's unavoidable in a book published by a secular press. All in all, though, a very good reference.

While it doesn't have everything you want to know, as has been noted by some reviewers, it is still the best one-stop reading for a good introduction to the topic of early Christianity in all of its great variety. 167 contributors (including W.H.C. Frend, Bruce Metzger, Boniface Ramsey, Theodore Stylianopoulis and Robert Wilken, Jaroslav Pelikan) and 1,244 entries with extensive bibliographies for more research.

A Must Have

This extensive reference guide is a must buy for anyone who is interested in any serious study of the early church. The entries are up to date with recent scholarship, and are written in a very clear and concise manner. The editors have covered nearly every point of interest in early Christianity. Unfortunately, the price puts this work out of reach for most students.
