Fortune, Love, Destiny, Sweet Mercy and the Heart, among others, guide and thwart the narrator's quest in Ren‚ d'Anjou's 15th-century allegorical tale of love and adventure. This translation is the first in English, presented with the original Middle French en face; the poem's rich poetic imagery, personal feeling, allegorical convention and a direct, almost colloquial tone come through clearly: "What do you wish me to say?/ It could not be believed:/ Loving enmity,/ Sweet battle, delectable misery,/ Pleasing sorrow, unhappy good,/ Repose which so labors/ And, without blows, battling and sorely/ Wounding my heart goes forth, without open wounds, Both openly and hidden from sight. I do not know what I shall become,/ For Pity takes such tiny steps/ In coming to my lady's heart." While the allegorical density and the length of the narrative, and the book's cost, may deter the casual poetry reader, those who take up the challenge will find themselves rewarded. The translators of Ren d'Anjou's 15th-century, Middle French allegorical poem have packed a great deal of information into one volume. In addition to offering the first full-length English translation of this allegory, they have included a biography of the author, a brief description of the original texts used for this translation, a summary of the action of the allegory, and sections discussing the critical and literary significance of the poem and the literary tradition influencing its creation. Gibbs (postgraduate, Cambridge) and Karczewska (romance languages and literatures, Harvard Univ.; Prophecy and the Quest of the Holy Grail) present the story of Heart and his adventures in search of the lady Mercy (who is being held prisoner by Refusal and Shame) in the original French with the translation on facing pages. A beautiful book, certainly well worth the expense

For students of medieval and renaissance art, as well as serious readers of allegory and history, this volume is a welcome addition to any library. It is the first English translation of the codex available, which enables art historians to contextualize its celebrated miniatures in a complex and fascinating narrative. The translation is elegant, accurate, and a pure pleasure to read. Professors Karczewska and Gibbs have done an admirable job providing essential biographical and literary perspective within which to understand the text, detailed notes explaining obscure references necessary to interpreting the story, and a complete accounting of variant and rejected readings. I highly recommend this work for use in and out of the classroom.
