"INTO THE WORDS"

Being but another worshipper at the alter of Stephen Sondheim, I was eager to read anything about him which went beyond your typical stage review.
This book was given to me as a gift and I eagerly opened it hoping to find hidden treasure about Sondheim and his work.
The book was not quite what I expected and at the same time EXACTLY what I expected. What Goodhart promises in the introduction, he delivers - a serious delving into the works of Sondheim, treating his musicals as literature. What I didn't expect was just how thoroughly the writers (Goodhart employs several essayists) would analyze character and plot.
One essay that comes to mind is one written on "Sweeney Todd." I really thought I knew as much as there was to know about this masterwork - WRONG. The essayist gives great detail into the psychological make-up of these characters...much more information that a layman or actor like myself can begin to understand. At times the analysis was clinical I had to back up and re-read the passage to get a grasp on what was being explored.
I've decided that the book will provide a wonderful reference to keep on my shelf for my own work on Sondheim musicals, but for simple pleasure reading, this book may not be appropriate unless you have your PHD.

not really worth getting

not bad, but not as entertaining as sondheim: a casebook. some of the analyses were quite obtuse (e.g. the lacanian analysis of sweeney todd and the argument that passion is about sondheim's relationship with his mother). i thought one of the more interesting essays was the first one about passion, but there weren't many others that were particularly relevant or insightful.

I ordered this book as a possible source for an essay on the works on Stephen Sondheim, unsure of what I'd find. What the book contained was exactly what it says: essays on the works of Stephen Sondheim. The essays varied from those concerning only one musical (the first six essays) to others which discussed over arching themes in his canon (the latter six essays). That being said, having had some previous experience with the plays (reading them, seeing them, knowing the stories, etc.) is necessary. This is not a history of Stephen Sondheim's works. It is an in-depth look at them. Finally, an analysis of Sondheim's works paralleling the analytical work done for all the other great playwrights of the twentieth century! The book covers most of Sondheim's composer-lyricist career in musical theater up to the mid-1990s. It does not include analysis of West Side Story, Do I Hear a Waltz?, Bounce/Road Show, or Gypsy. All that being said, it is a great book for Sondheim aficionados, dramaturgs, and Sondheim fans.

J. Gordon Melton, one of the editors of this encyclopedia, has compiled numerous reference works on religion in the U.S., the best known of which is the Encyclopedia of American Religions (3d ed., Gale, 1989). Coeditors Murphy and Gary L. Ward are affiliated respectively with Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary and the Institute for the Study of American Religion, which is headed by Melton. Approximately 30 contributors prepared articles devoted to aspects of African American religions.

The encyclopedia includes three types of entries: biographical sketches of 773 African American religious leaders; 341 entries on African American denominations and religious organizations (including white churches with significant black memberships and educational institutions); and topical articles on important aspects of African American religious life (e.g., African American Christians during the Colonial Era, Music in the African American Church). The biographical sketches range from a paragraph to several pages for such major figures as Martin Luther King. Entries for the larger African American denominations are likewise several pages in length, as are most of the topical articles.

The alphabetically arranged entries are preceded by three introductory essays and a chronology of major events in black religious history from 1618 to 1991. A bibliography of 303 major texts on African American religion follows the entries. Most of the entries conclude with a list of references specifically related to that subject. A directory section provides the current addresses and telephone numbers of the national headquarters of the churches and organizations covered in the encyclopedia.

In addition to the name and subject index, a "Biographical Cross-Index by Religious Tradition" lists all persons whose biographical sketches appear in the encyclopedia under the names of the denominations with which they have been associated. While the introduction makes reference to "30 or so major topical entries," examination of the alphabetical list of entries and the index identified only about half that number. A separate listing of the topical articles would have been useful.

The Directory of African American Religious Bodies [RBB D 15 91] claimed to be the first comprehensive reference work exclusively devoted to the African American religious experience. Although there is some duplication with the book under review, the two titles are complementary in significant ways. The unique contribution of the Encyclopedia is the biographies of religious leaders. The Directory, on the other hand, covers almost three times as many religious bodies and organizations, and users of the Encyclopedia are referred to the Directory for "more detailed listings of names and addresses within the African American religious community." The Directory was recommended for "larger academic and public libraries and for other libraries where there is interest in black religious bodies." The Encyclopedia is appropriate for a broader spectrum of libraries.

Molecular Biology of the Cell : The Problems Book is a great book for biology students as well as those interested in really learning the concepts behind the theory. This book is extremely detailed in its questions as it vigorously tests the knowledge learned from it's companion textbook, Molecular Biology of the Cell. This book has tremendously helped in my understanding of the major chapters of the main textbook (chapters 6-end). It provides a thorough breakdown on the types of questions that it asks. For example, the questions in the book are structured by True/False, matching, as well as essay formats. This provides for a varied way of learning the essential material. About the Author
Robert Bud holds a doctorate in the History and Sociology of Science from the University of Pennsylvania, and serves as Head of Research (Collections) at the Science Museum in London. His widespread publications on the history of chemistry and biotechnology include Invisible Connections: Instruments, Institutions and Science (l992), and The Uses of Life: A History of Biotechnology (l993).
Deborah Warner holds a M.A. in the History of Sciences from Harvard University, and serves as Curator of Physical Science Collections at the National Museum of American History. Her widespread publications in the history of science and scientific instruments include Alvan Clark & Sons: Artists in Optics (1968; rev. 1996), and The Sky Explored: Celestial Cartography 1500-1800 (1979). She is also founder and editor of Rittenhouse, a quarterly journal of the American instrument enterprise.

An ambitious work that leaves much to be desired

One has to celebrate the publication of a book like this, becuse of the scarcity of the information available on this subject. The book is relatively big (709 p.), more expensive than big ($150) and of course has quite an amount of interesting information.
But it is probably as important to highlight its shortcomings, which show how much remains to be done. I do not pretend to do a general review, for which I am not qualified and that is quite impossible in a work of encyclopedic pretense like this one. I will restrain my commentary mainly to the treatment of the field of electricity and magnetism, which I suppose has its importance in scientific instrumentation and does not lack in amount and variety of instruments by itself. Its reflection in this book is very unfair and inadequate, in my opinion. All the entries that begin with "Electricity-Electrostatic" span a mere 20 pages, 7 of which are dedicated to medical applications (electrocardiograph, electroencephalograph, electromyograph and electroretinograph, to be precise). One will search in vain, on the contrary, for any mention to the electron tube, or valve, or thermionic device. The totality of what the editors and the authors have to say about radio waves and related topics is included under the clumsy entry of "Radio Wave Detector". Here the whole history of electromagnetism and of radio is dispatched in little more than one page, including all its apparatuses and "science". In this egregious page one finds the only mention I have been able to locate to the "thermionic diode" and the "triode", but not one reference to galena or silicon or germanium. Coils, resistors, resonance, oscillators or quartz crystals are not even mentioned per se. The arbitrariness of the selection of voices and of the espace allocated to individual items is reflected in the fact that "oscilloscope" , for a contrary instance, has an entry for itself of a full page an a half. Under the entry "Current meter" it is only spoken about devices to measure water flows.
Another example of what I consider a total lack of perspective could be the fact that almost 10 pages are devoted to several types of compass, whereas the whole subject of clocks is dispatched in 5 pages. The editors try to explain in the Introduction how they have managed to handle the question of What is a Scientific Instrument? The explanation is not very clear and the results reflect this. Whereas it is probably fashionable among historians of science and museum curators to consider "Escherichia coli" as a "scientific instrument", this kind of boutades and trade jokes should not justify the lack of rigour in the treatment of what are, and have always been, undeniable instruments of science. The book is a conglomerate of fair individual cards, but nobody seems to have taken care of the equilibrium of the whole file. For having so many illustrious authors, the work is quite poor, superficial and deceiving.
Cross-references are practically nonexistent and the main index is of no much help unfortunately for bridging the lacunae, being for the most part a mere reproduction of the entries of a work that is by itself alphabetically ordered. The typography, printing and other production aspects of the book are of good quality.

Brian P. Levack is John Green Regents Professor of History at the University of Texas at Austin. A former Guggenheim Fellow, his other writings on witchcraft include Articles on Witchcraft, Magic, and Demonology (1992), The Witch-Hunt in Early Modern Europe (1995), and Witchcraft and Magic in Europe: The Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries (1999). Dr. Levack is also a specialist in the history of early modern England and Scotland, and has written several books on the subject.

Richard M. Lerner is the Bergstrom Chair in Applied Developmental Science and the Director of the Applied Developmental Science Institute in the Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Development at Tufts University. A developmental psychologist, Lerner received a Ph.D. in 1971 from the City University of New York. He is known for his theory of, and research about, relations between life-span human development and contextual or ecological change. Lerner has done foundational studies of adolescents' relations with their peer, family, school, and community contexts and is a leader in the study of public policies and community-based programs aimed at the promotion of positive youth development. With Sage, he authored "America's Youth in Crisis: Challenges and Options for Programs and Policies" (1995), co-edited the four-volume "Handbook of Applied Developmental Science", and is co-editing the two-volume "Encyclopedia of Applied Developmental Science".

Fantastic resource on adolescent development

This text is an excellent resource for anyone interested in studying adolescent development. It is a compilation of foundational articles from key authors throughout the years. I would especially recommend purchase of this text to anyone who currently is or plans to be in academia. I am very glad I have added this resource to my personal library.
