In the second edition of The Encyclopedia of Police Science, Bailey updates and expands his 1989 work [RBB Jl 89]. More than 200 entries (compared with 143 in the first edition) detail all aspects of police science, including administration, detection techniques, psychological and social issues, types of crime, and legal questions. Brief histories of various U.S. police departments and biographies of important historical figures supplement the text.
Entries vary in length. Biographical sketches are only one or two pages; longer entries, such as Citizen Attitudes and Complaints or International Police Cooperation, are six or more pages. Some entries include step-by-step procedures for conducting investigations (Arson Investigations), while others outline various program standards (Physical Fitness Standards). Tables, statistical charts, and figures are included where appropriate. A bibliography of pertinent works is found at the end of most entries. Most entries are signed; those that are not are the work of the editor. The majority of contributors are professors of criminal justice, sociology, psychology, or police science. Others are in the field of law enforcement.
In addition to the bibliographies with individual entries, there is a bibliography of police history at the end of the volume. A general index is followed by an index of legal cases. This edition, unlike the first, does not contain illustrations.
Libraries that do not own the first edition will want to add The Encyclopedia of Police Science to their reference collections. It provides valuable information on police methodology and issues for a general audience. Libraries owning the first edition may want to purchase the second for the new and revised entries and for the updated statistical charts.
