Fortune, Love, Destiny, Sweet Mercy and the Heart, among others, guide and thwart the narrator's quest in Ren‚ d'Anjou's 15th-century allegorical tale of love and adventure. This translation is the first in English, presented with the original Middle French en face; the poem's rich poetic imagery, personal feeling, allegorical convention and a direct, almost colloquial tone come through clearly: "What do you wish me to say?/ It could not be believed:/ Loving enmity,/ Sweet battle, delectable misery,/ Pleasing sorrow, unhappy good,/ Repose which so labors/ And, without blows, battling and sorely/ Wounding my heart goes forth, without open wounds, Both openly and hidden from sight. I do not know what I shall become,/ For Pity takes such tiny steps/ In coming to my lady's heart." While the allegorical density and the length of the narrative, and the book's cost, may deter the casual poetry reader, those who take up the challenge will find themselves rewarded. The translators of Ren d'Anjou's 15th-century, Middle French allegorical poem have packed a great deal of information into one volume. In addition to offering the first full-length English translation of this allegory, they have included a biography of the author, a brief description of the original texts used for this translation, a summary of the action of the allegory, and sections discussing the critical and literary significance of the poem and the literary tradition influencing its creation. Gibbs (postgraduate, Cambridge) and Karczewska (romance languages and literatures, Harvard Univ.; Prophecy and the Quest of the Holy Grail) present the story of Heart and his adventures in search of the lady Mercy (who is being held prisoner by Refusal and Shame) in the original French with the translation on facing pages. A beautiful book, certainly well worth the expense

For students of medieval and renaissance art, as well as serious readers of allegory and history, this volume is a welcome addition to any library. It is the first English translation of the codex available, which enables art historians to contextualize its celebrated miniatures in a complex and fascinating narrative. The translation is elegant, accurate, and a pure pleasure to read. Professors Karczewska and Gibbs have done an admirable job providing essential biographical and literary perspective within which to understand the text, detailed notes explaining obscure references necessary to interpreting the story, and a complete accounting of variant and rejected readings. I highly recommend this work for use in and out of the classroom.

Odd that he uses the word "cult" in title. He doesn't think they exist at all.

I find it extremely disingenous for J. Gordon Melton to use the word "Cult" in the title of his work, when he obviously doesn't believe that any religion is a cult at all. He apparently doesn't mind taking the money of people that want to learn about cults. The title of this book should be, "There Is No Such Thing as a Cult: All Religious Organizations are Equally Valid and Useful". I imagine that Melton finds it humorous that he tricks people that are buying this book into thinking they are getting a compilation of exposes on various cultic organizations -- when he is really selling a long argument about why each organization shouldn't even be called a cult, but rather a "new religious movement". This author is a huckster.

J. Gordon Melton co-founded cult apologist organization CESNUR, heads CESNUR USA, and directs the Institute for the Study of American Religion (ISAR). This Methodist minister (ordained elder in the United Methodist Church) is seen by many Christian and secular apologists and counter-cult professionals as a cult apologist.

Though Melton professes to be an Evangelical Christian, many Evangelicals do not consider his views on cults and other religions as representative. For example, Melton claims that the Jehovah's Witnesses, Unification Church, Jonestown (Jim Jones' People's Temple), Aum Shinrikyo, the Church of Scientology, etcetera, are not cults.

Rather than recognize and acknowledge the sociological and/or theological aspects that make each of these movements cults, Melton prefers the euphemistic term "New Religious Movements."

Melton has become a controversial figure for several reasons:

1) His defense of various groups widely viewed as, theologically, cults of Christianity (e.g. the Local Church, and The Family). Though he has admitted that he does not know where to draw the line between orthodoxy and heresy, Melton even aided the Local Church in its lawsuit against a Christian countercult ministry.

2) His largely uncritical treatment of groups ranging from the Church Universal and Triumphant to the Church of Scientology. Some of his work reads like made-to-order PR material. His study of the Church Universal and Triumphant, done in co-operation with fellow cult-apologist James R. Lewis, is described by one sociologist as a "a travesty of research."

3) His attacks on Christian apologetics ministries, apologists, and counter-cult professionals.

4) His assertion that apostates invariably lie.

For these reasons, while most people acknowledge Melton's expertise at gathering and organizing research data, many religion professionals and secular anti-cult activitists believe he does a poor job at interpreting that data.

A veterianry students dream!

This book is a useful pocket guide for those who find it difficult to remember everything all of the time! The information is concise and provides useful references to the parent text. One drawback is that 20/20 vision is essential as the text is fairly small - but it is easy to carry around with you. One further improvement would be to revise the index as finding the section you need can sometimes take a while...a definite drawback for a bedside textbook! Overall a useful pocket aid and well worth the money!

An excellent summary of an excellent book

This Manual is a summary of the larger book by the same authors. It contains everything that you need to know about the internal diseases of dogs and cats. The organization is superb: it takes you from the etiology to the treatment whithout forgetting an excellent walk through the diagnosis. The information is concise, very modern, and as complete as you may want it. But be aware! This is not a book for learners: if you need pictures and details of things an experienced veterinarian knows well, get the parent book! Both are excellent texts for their own purposes and well worth their prices.

Very good compilation of in-depth essays on Sondheim works

This volume of 14 essays, by 14 different authors, on selected works of Stephen Sondheim is aimed principally at an academic audience, and does not cover all of Sondheim's musicals individually. I also use the word "works" rather than musicals, because the essay by Douglas Braverman covers not a musical, but Sondheim's one original movie screenplay, "The Last of Sheila", although Braverman does tie this screenplay back to Sondheim's musicals, not surprisingly.

For the most part, even though the discussions are quite in depth and "academic" in that sense, the essays generally avoid literary jargon, so that Sondheim devotees or fanatics who aren't necessarily literary academics can also potentially derive much enjoyment from this collection. The one essay which lays on the literary terminology rather more is Gary Konas' essay on "Passion". To a lesser extent, Barbara Means Fraser also uses a few "heavier" academic terms of analysis, but since she fairly breezes through each musical in her analysis of the role of the chorus in Sondheim's musicals, there almost isn't time to get bogged down. I must confess as a small matter of personal taste that I found Judith Schlesinger's use of the line from "Sweeney Todd" of 'Don't I know you, mister?' as her essay closer very arch and self-conscious, in an otherwise good essay.

Although this volume certainly isn't "casual" reading, it is accessible enough for the intelligent lay-reader who is willing to focus on the task at hand. Sondheim fans will need no recommendation from me.
