Designed to provide anyone interested in theater for young people with a one-stop source for finding plays to produce, this tome describes, indexes, and evaluates more than 3000 plays, scenes, monologs, and skits published from 1975 to the present. Arranged by title, each entry provides a grade range for the actors and audience, a brief description of physical settings, playing time, royalty information, type of play, author's name, and where it can be found. A particularly unique feature is an evaluative recommendation or rating by editors and reviewers. Five other indexes facilitate use: grade level, author/original title, cast numbers, playing time, and subject or type of play. All other indexes refer back to this title entry arrangement, making the book rather difficult to use since an indexed item may refer back to hundreds of entries. Also, despite being boldfaced, titles are difficult to pick out from the text. Arranging the entire book by type of play (monolog, skit, etc.) would have been more useful, since rarely do patrons know the title of what they are seeking. Finally, the price may be prohibitive for the very groups needing this type of information most--school libraries and small theater groups. Yet, even with these reservations, this is a tool that neither Dean H. Keller's Index to Plays in Periodicals, 1977-87 (Scarecrow, 1990) nor the latest edition of Play Index ( 1983-87 ; Wilson, 1988) nor Billie M. Connor and Helene Machedlover's Ottemiller's Index to Plays in Collections (Scarecrow, 1988. 7th ed.) can compete with in terms of helping patrons choose plays to produce. Recommended.
