An outstanding collection of essays on Norse women

"Cold Counsel" is an outstanding collection of essays on Norse women. I found many of the articles thought-provoking and informative. It's still very difficult to find good information on Viking Age women - some of the best research is only published as journal articles, and it's only in the past 4-5 years that books on the topic of Norse women have begun to appear. This volume is fairly expensive, but very well worth it for anyone studying women in the Viking Age. Articles include:

New Takes on an Overlooked Topic

As far as Garland compliations go, this is one of the better ones. Collected essays span topics from goddesses and eddic lore to the roles of everyday women in the sagas. A couple exceptional articles, many quite good, an essay wrought with 1970's feminist theory I honestly could not wade through. Overall worth a read for divergent takes on Women in Norse Culture.

The scholarly but extremely readable articles in this book provide an excellent introduction to the field of medieval women. The novice can find areas in which to start research, and the more experienced reader will find much new and useful information. Articles are written by recognized experts in their fields, and cover both well-studied topics (although always with fresh information) and areas less often covered. Highly recommended.

The study begins by examining contemporary public representations that position poor welfare women as antithetical to everything we have been taught to value and trust. The author argues that trying to stabilize and make sense of unpalatably complex issues of poverty and oppression and attempting to obscure hegemonic stakes in representation, these narratives reduce and collapse the lives and experiences of poor women to deceptively simplistic dramas, which are then offered up for public consumption. The terms of these dramas are palatable precisely because they are presented as simple oppositions of good and bad, deserving and undeserving. The author then goes on to connect these contemporary representations of the poor woman to earlier inscriptions that produced and continue to patrol this dichotomous template. Employing a genealogy of social/literary inscription the author traces the frantic writing of the body of the poor woman to her representations in the writings of John Steinbeck, Erskine Caldwell, Betty Smith, Claude McKay, Carl Van Vechten, Richard Wright, Tillie Olsen, Grace Lumpkin, Harriet Arnow, and Zora Neale Hurston; and to the photography of Jacob Riis and Dorothea Lange. In connecting these foundational templates to the contemporary production of the "poor American woman" the author demonstrates the power of these early texts to inform our understanding of the "deserving" and the "undeserving" poor woman today.

Very readable: the power and limits of judicial prison reform

In 1971, Rhode Island had what experts agreed was the worst prison system in the country. By 1997, it had among the best.

Rhode Island has one of the smallest prison population, and is one of the very few states with an integrated system, meaning that people awaiting trial and those serving sentences are all under control fo the state prison system. The entire system is in one location--the Adult Correctional Institution (ACI), under a single politically appointed director. This makes Rhode Island an interesting petri dish in which to examine, on a more manageable scale, problems which plague prisons nationwide.

Rhode Island moved from the hard-core disciplinarian system, where prisoners were routinely abused, and favoritism and racism were rampant, conditions were filthy and prisoners sat around in cells with little meaningful work all day--which was the national norm before the prison reform movement took hold in the 60's. By the 90's, that system had been entirely displaced by a rule-based system, which increased safety for both the officers and prisoners.

That Rhode Island accomplished this transformation during a period of skyrocketing prison populations, and economic crisis, is remarkable. Which is not to say that the transformation was easy, or smooth. The system went through a period of chaos, where guards effectively abandoned all attempts at maintaining order, and moved through a period of severe overcrowding as prison populations exploded in the late 70's and 80's, without a matching increase in bed space, or money.

Professor Carroll has provided a fascinating narrative describing that transformation, using as his lens a long running federal class action case challenging the system as unconstitutional. Carroll's perspectives include the courts (particularly court appointed monitors, experts and special masters), lawyers representing prisoners, prison officials, unionized guards, the media (primarily the statewide Providence Journal), and the politicians.

While I heartily recommend this book to anyone interested in the question of crime and punishment in America, I have two reservations:

First, the voice of the prisoners is largely absent. While Carroll describes the prisoners' involvement in the process in the early years, their voice drops out of his narrative early on. Thus, the reader is left with very little insight into how all of the changes were perceived by--and how they affected the day-to-day lives of--the prisoners themselves. I presume that this limitation reflects a limitation of the available historic record--prisoners are largely voiceless. Nonetheless, it would have been interesting to include interviews with prisoners (and family members) who were incarcerated at various points during the transformation.

Second, there is no discussion of whether any of this "worked." That is, the point of prisons is presumably to reduce crime and thus make citizens safer. Professor Carroll devotes no time at all to this question. Was there any impact on the crime rate in Rhode Island? On the rate of recidivism? On the number of juveniles returning as adults? Since there were periods where large numbers of pre-trial detainees were released (to reduce overcrowding) on bonds paid for by the state itself, did those released commit new crimes in any statistically significant numbers?

These are questions raised not just by Professor Carroll's book, but in most of the academic literature on prisons. Perhaps Professor Carroll (or someone else) can address them in future. In the meantime, I highly recommend this book.

This timely volume from the reputable Garland Reference Library of the Humanities series is an alphabetically arranged encyclopedia, carefully edited and authoritatively written, with entries covering a range of issues, events, and people related to the constitutionally protected rights of religious freedom. The 100 contributing writers are all professionally distinguished and associated with solid academic institutions. Precisely written entries are signed and include both lengthy bibliographies and "cases cited" listings when appropriate.Coverage ranges from colonial times to contemporary Supreme Court decisions. Within this broad scope, the text discusses representative themes without losing thoroughness. Rulings are analyzed, theories are considered, and biographical details are supplied. Among the entries are Black churches in the antebellum South, Blasphemy in American law, The Good Samaritan, Jefferson and religion, Labor law and religion, and Sunday regulations in the nineteenth century . There are substantive discussions of individual religious traditions, relevant legal decisions, and a number of Supreme Court justices. Most entries are at least a page in length; longer ones, such as School prayer , run to more than five pages. The encyclopedia concludes with a helpful index of cases and a subject index, the value of which is diminished by the fact that it supplies only page numbers (more than 200 page numbers are listed under First Amendment, for example).This title takes a more scholarly and historical approach than another recent volume, ABC-CLIO's Religion and the Law [RBB Jl 00], which focuses mainly on current issues. A few years ago, i wrote a college paper on the female body/ thoughts about pregnancy in medieval times. It was a time when women were midwives and took care of medical issues... (when later, the medical field would become male-dominated.)
This book was not only the BEST book on the subject ... but really one of the only ones i could find.

The future of diagnostic sonography in today's era of cost containment is unclear. As compared with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT), sonography has the disadvantages of a limited field of view, poorer resolution, operator dependence, and interference by bone and air. In most regions of the body, sonography is considered a good screening test, but if you really need an answer you go to CT or MRI. With pressure to do as few studies as possible, why not go straight to CT or MRI? Because sonography does have advantages: flexibility, real-time monitoring, low cost, no ionizing radiation, and relatively inexpensive upgrades. I believe sonography has a bright future in the managed-care era, and this book illustrates many new applications for it.

The first edition of Diagnostic Ultrasound was extremely well received and became a standard, authoritative reference book. Given the advances in the field over the past seven years, including color and power Doppler and new and improved transducer technology, a revised, updated second edition is welcome. The editors have assembled an outstanding group of approximately 100 expert contributors. The layout of this book is beautiful. Colored boxes highlight important lists and tables throughout the text. The illustrations are large and well annotated and show exactly what they are intended to show. Correlative imaging methods, drawings, and diagrams are used appropriately. The topics covered in the two volumes cover the entire field of diagnostic ultrasound, including physics and bioeffects; contrast agents; abdominal, pelvic, and thoracic sonography; interventional sonography; musculoskeletal sonography; intraoperative and laparoscopic sonography; small-parts imaging; vascular sonography; obstetric and fetal sonography; and pediatric sonography. References are copious, cited throughout the text and listed at the ends of the chapters.

Radiology residents will want to purchase this book as their definitive reference work on sonography. The general radiologist who does some sonography should own it for reference during daily practice. Experienced ultrasound practitioners will be drawn to the relatively new material presented in the chapters on contrast agents, the gastrointestinal tract, the abdominal wall, the diaphragm and peritoneum, the thorax, intraoperative sonography, and the rotator cuff and tendons. Any brave souls who wish to plunge into ultrasound-guided interventional procedures will find expert guidance in several chapters. The second volume consists of sections on obstetric and fetal sonography and pediatric sonography. Each of these could be published separately as a monograph. This book is a must acquisition for departmental libraries. Specialists in obstetrics and gynecology and in vascular surgery will probably opt to purchase monographs devoted to their specialties.

I cannot praise the editors, authors, and publisher of this book enough. One rarely finds a textbook that is encyclopedic, easy to read, beautifully illustrated, and thoughtfully laid out. Most book reviews are supposed to present something in the way of shortcomings. I suppose I could find a few typographical errors here or there, or quibble about some statement somewhere. However, I really cannot find anything wrong that is worth mentioning.

THE diagnostic ultrasound texbook

The second edition updates an already definitive textbook of diagnostic ultrasound. The contributors are all luminaries in the field, many having authored their own texts. Dr. Rumack has been able to edit the book into a comprehensive yet readable text. The liberal addition of colored texts, tables and charts greatly enhances comprehension as well as facilitate quick review at the viewbox. It is well worth the price.

If the first edition was brilhant this 2nd edition is a must in the field of diagnostic ultrasound. There is an answer of vitually any subject, all with a table with a brief resume. Fotographs are very clear and cover almost every topic. The editors may be proud of its creation, a definitive book in this ever changing and growing medical speciality.
