For the Qualtative researcher of educational biographies.

The book is comprised of articles in five sections:

1. Qualitative research and Educational Biography,
2. Methodological Issues and Biographical Research,
3. Archival Research and Educational Biography,
4. Educational Biography as Dissertation Research,
5. Implication for the Field of Education.

Found this book very inspiring while working on a narrative biographical research of high school teachers, especially what Louise De Salvo wrote at the end in an article named "Advice to Aspiring Educational Biographers" (p. 269):
"...if it is your predilection, you unashamedly bring whatever you are concerned with in your life into the arena of your work, to enrich and deepen the understanding of somone else's life, to create an ongoing dialectic between your life and your work in which your work enables you to understand your life better and your life enables you to understand your subject's life better".

The book not only inspired me but also added to my understanding of biography as a tool in educational research.

Unpatriotic

Hodge's "Redefining European Security" does not even dwell upon the fundamentals of defense and military strategies. Its a hodgepodge of basic definitions cut and pasted from some of Europe's local newspapers and from "un-named sources." Truly, the European experiment, most notably Britain, while less drastic in it's security failures, was discouraging. This is in complete contrast to Hodge's Conservatist bias.

On the negative side, the writing tends to be textbookish, recent trends are occasionally ignored (as in the article "Chain Gangs"), and the index lacks consistency (e.g., check out Leavenworth). But, overall, this new work compares well with Vergil Williams's standard Dictionary of American Penology (Greenwood, 1987. 2d ed.). The incarceration rate in the U.S. is now among the highest in the world, and crime remains a major social and political issue facing our nation. Information about penal institutions, imprisonment, and prisoners is critical to criminal justice professionals and concerned citizens alike. The Encyclopedia of American Prisons offers an overview of incarceration in America in more than 160 essays written by a variety of corrections experts, largely from the academic and research community.

The volume opens with a very brief "Chronology of American Prison History" from 1773 to 1993, followed by the signed articles, arranged alphabetically by topic. An index provides additional access to topics, cases, and individual names. Although organization and treatment of the topics within each essay vary, most articles contain some type of historical discussion to frame the issue, explanations of important developments and trends within the topic, and a bibliography for further reading. From the brief essay Riots, for example, the reader gains a sense of the causes and costs of prison riots since the first in 1774 and is left with some direction for further research. Biographies of significant individuals in prison history, such as penal reformer Katharine Bement Davis, are included, as are histories of famous prisons (Alcatraz) and extended explanations of selected terms encountered in prison studies, such as snitch (an informer). Current concerns, such as Crowding and Elderly Inmates, are treated.

Relevant statistics about prisons and imprisonment are frequently embedded within articles. Diet and Food Service provides the average daily food cost nationally ($3.13 per day per prisoner). However, the encyclopedia is not designed to serve primarily as a statistical compendium, which occasionally results in some disappointment. For example, a user seeking recidivism rates will find an interesting and thoughtful article that details the issues considered in calculating recidivism rates, but for actual data users will need to consult publications produced by individual states or by such organizations as the American Correctional Association.

The Encyclopedia of American Prisons is recommended for medium-size and large academic and public libraries and is a necessary purchase for collections serving students of law enforcement, criminal justice, or sociology.

I teach an undergraduate course in critical theory. Tyson's is the single most useful introduction to that subject that I have encountered -- and I've looked at many, many introductions to theory. Tyson's book is clear and practical, setting forth the principles of each critical theory and then applying those principles in analyzing F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel, "The Great Gatsby." If I could, I would not merely give this book five stars, but also "flag" it for teachers and students searching Amazon for the best introduction to literary theory: this is the one that you should buy.

A breath of fresh air in literary appreciation

I think that most undergraduate students will appreciate being wisely and gently shepherded into the wild fields of literary theory by professor Tyson's 1999 study. In fact, so will most lay reader lambs who innocently venture into what they thought were safe fields of, say, the Times Literary Supplement in hopes of deepening their appreciation of the classics and literary creativity. So many "academic" surveys cloak in academic wool their lupine ideological teeth, Tyson keeps a strong, healthy overview of the various schools (packs?) of critics. She appreciates the concerns and contributions of the various critical approaches without being co-opted; she shares their thoughtful contributions in "user-friendly" fashion without resorting to the cutesy "for dummie sheep" approach.
An excellent guide through the tangled weavings of modern critical writings, analyzing with respect, exploring with optimistic skepticism. GENERAL READERS: Don't leave this "textbook" in the classroom; it is a most comfortable armour for venturing forth into the 21st Century literary world. If you were not fortunate enough to be one of Tyson's students, study with her here!

Has Preusser Made a Critical Thinker Out of Me

Barbara Preussers' book "Critical Thinking in Medical-Surgical Settings" has helped me as a nursing student to look at each aspect of a patient, and to search deeply for any clues that may guide me in taking care of my future patients. There are many case studies in this book that cover a wide range of disorders in all systems of the body. The only thing I didn't like about the book was the fact that it does not have the answers to the questions in it. This was not a requiered text for me, I bought it for extra help, so I believe it would have been more benefical if I knew whether my answers were right or wrong. But I do recommend it to any nursing student who needs help in critical thinking, which is very important in the nursing field.
