Here, works by writers of animal stories in Canada, the U.S., and Britain; works of early Australian colonialist literature; and Frances Hodgson Burnett's A Little Princess come under the scrutiny of our postmodern reading practices. Section Three deals directly with contemporary texts for children that manifest both a postcolonial and a neo-colonial content, and includes studies of children's literature from Canada, Australia, Africa, the Caribbean, and the United States.

Music and African American studies professors Southern and Wright previously collaborated on an annotated bibliography of African-American Traditions in Song, Sermon, Tale, and Dance, 1660s-1920 (1990). Here, they reproduce 260 genre pictures of black Americans "in their own private social world," with an emphasis on expressive culture. Their analysis blends musicology, ethnomusicology, musical iconography, and art history. Works are grouped chronologically (colonial and Federalist, antebellum, and postbellum eras) and by themes (e.g., "The African Legacy" or "The Black Preacher as an Institution"). Artists represented include familiar names like Thomas Eakins and Winslow Homer as well as now forgotten figures; all but one were white Americans or Europeans. Eileen Southern is Professor Emerita of Music and Afro-American Studies at Harvard University. She is the author or editor of several books on African-American music, including The Music of Black Americans: A History, Readings in Black American Music, and Biographical Dictionary of Afro-American and African Musicians. She lives in Queens, NY.
Josephine Wright is Professor of Music and Black Studies at the College of Wooster in Ohio. She is coeditor (with Samuel A. Floyd, Jr.) of New Perspectives on Music: Essays in Honor of Eileen Southern, and coauthor (with Eileen Southern) of African-American Traditions in Song, Sermon, Tale, and Dance: 1600s-1920: An Annotated Bibliography.
