This is a wonderful book for anyone attempting to understand the structure and organization of higher education in Canada. Recognizing that there is no Canadian "system" of higher education, the book includes thoughtful essays on the higher education arrangements in each province and territory. This is quite simply a "foundational" volume for the study of higher education in Canada.

This book provides an excellent introduction to the complexities of Canada's highly decentralized higher education system. It is now a little dated (published in 1997 I believe) but I still think that it is probably the best overview book on Canadian higher education that has been published.

About the Author
David Hursh is Associate Professor and Director of Teacher Education at the Warner Graduate School at the University of Rochester. In the 1970s he co-directed an alternative university, directed two private elementary schools (one of which he founded), and was a consultant on race and gender equity. He is the author of numerous studies on democracy, including "Reforming Schools: From Pious Hope to Democratic Struggle" in Discourse: Studies in the Cultural Politics of Education.
E. Wayne Ross is Associate Professor of Education at the State University of New York at Binghamton, where he teaches courses in social studies education, qualitative research, and educational foundations. A former secondary school and day care teacher, Ross is also co-founder of the Rouge Forum, a group of educators, students, and parents seeking a democratic society. He is the editor or co-editor of several books on education including The Social Studies Curriculum" Purposes, Problems and Possibilities (SUNY Press). He is currently editor of the journal Theory and Research in Social Education.

Putting medieval British music back on the map

Nicky Losseff's 'The Best Concords' is one of the few studies of English medieval music to discuss the repertory in any depth. The main themes of the book are that these pieces of music, which include motets and conductus in Latin and the vernacular, have suffered through being overshadowed by the so-called Notre Dame polyphony of the 13th century. Losseff is careful to ensure that the difference between where a piece was copied and where it may have originated are clearly distinguished. The majority of pieces of music from this period are found in fragments of leaves from what were originally much larger books, but an important source which has survived almost intact originated at St Andrew's in Scotland. However, the importance of this book may well also have given a false idea that it was representative of musical practice across the British Isles at the time that it was copied (c.1230).
Although this is clearly a highly detailed, academic text, the writing style is accessible and communicates the author's obvious enthusiasm for the subject. There are few musical examples in the text, and to fully understand the points being made I would recommend finding a copy of the appropriate volumes of Polyphonic Music of the Fourteenth Century, which contains most of the complete pieces. For students wishing to engage with the issues relating to the transmission of insular music during this period, this is an invaluable text.

An outstanding collection of essays on Norse women

"Cold Counsel" is an outstanding collection of essays on Norse women. I found many of the articles thought-provoking and informative. It's still very difficult to find good information on Viking Age women - some of the best research is only published as journal articles, and it's only in the past 4-5 years that books on the topic of Norse women have begun to appear. This volume is fairly expensive, but very well worth it for anyone studying women in the Viking Age. Articles include:

New Takes on an Overlooked Topic

As far as Garland compliations go, this is one of the better ones. Collected essays span topics from goddesses and eddic lore to the roles of everyday women in the sagas. A couple exceptional articles, many quite good, an essay wrought with 1970's feminist theory I honestly could not wade through. Overall worth a read for divergent takes on Women in Norse Culture.

This is a terrific study of an often overlooked subject. Truly groundbreaking work in fact. If you are trying to understand women in literature, this is a great study to look at.

A college course in one volume

The scholarly but extremely readable articles in this book provide an excellent introduction to the field of medieval women. The novice can find areas in which to start research, and the more experienced reader will find much new and useful information. Articles are written by recognized experts in their fields, and cover both well-studied topics (although always with fresh information) and areas less often covered. Highly recommended.
